“'Push' is a pretty interesting tune. This was the last song
written for the record. Musically it was one of the only songs on the
record that was written out of us just jamming. We had one of our first
meetings with Duncan Watt about helping us with pre-production and
something he pointed out was we needed another song, something really
up-tempo and rockin! So we got together and I started playing the chorus
groove and we we're off and running (no pun intended) from there.
Lyrically there's a lot to it, read what you want into it, some songs are
just meant to be that way and are better left a mystery. I'm very proud of this
song on all levels. Shaun Michaud did a great job mixing this one. The verse
sections with the loops and the band kicking in and out came out exactly as
visioned, which never happens. The ending was a suggestion by Duncan to
have the band come back in playing the keyboard bass riff. This is the
only song that he worked with us on from the start, the others were
already written. We spent a lot of time experimenting vocally on this one
as well. The verses were initially very influenced by the song “Deep Enough”
by Live. I wanted them to be really rhythmic, and they were originally rapped but
I ditched that idea quickly as almost every band seems to be doing that these days.
And the last thing I want to be considered is a Rap/Metal band. The ending vocal
chaos was a combination of me listening to way too much Faith No More and the 40 min.
